Ground bond test

The ground bond test - often also called earth bond or protective conductor measurement - is next to the hipot test one of the most important safety tests of electrical equipment.

The ground bond test is only applied to electrical equipment of protection class I. Tested hereby is whether the protective conductor resistance does not exceed a limit value specified in the standards. Background of this test is to determine if any possibly occurring leakage currents in the DUT are correctly discharged to the ground. If the connection is not in order there may be a high contact voltage for the user on metallic parts of the device: the contact current would flow through the user to the ground.

Another reason for the importance of the ground bond test is that the insulation may deteriorate in the device during operation of a device. This process can take years and lead to a short circuit between the live wires and the housing of the device. Through this short circuit the housing is energized and in the worst case even under mains voltage. In such a case the user is protected by the ground bond conductor by a short circuit generated against earth. A functioning ground bond system discharges the resulting short circuit reliably to earth.

With the devices of SPS electronic you are always on the safe side. For the ground bond test on your products SPS electronic offers you various solutions: in addition to the P 1800D (pure ground bond tester) we are pleased to offer you various safety and function test devices such as the KT 1886B. With these multi function testers you can perform in addition to the ground bond test a number of other safety tests (such as the hipot test, leakage current test or insulation test, too.)
