The hipot test also known as high voltage measurement is used to ensure the insulation strength of electronic components for low voltage (protection class I and II). In this test the insulation of the current-carrying conductors and the safety distance to the housing are tested in various products such as electrical appliances, electrical machines, switchgear and controlgear and switchgear cabinets.

A hipot test as opposed to the insulation measurement, a voltage strength measurement, which checks the required insulation distances. Usually a hipot test is carried out by the short-circuited main current circuit (phase and neutral wire) against the protective earth conductor.
The test time and the test voltage are defined differently depending on the standard (VDE, EN, IEC, UL etc.) and protection class. During the test no flashover or breakdown must occur at the DUT.
When testing with high voltage a distinction is made between alternative and direct voltage tests. In many standards both AC and DC voltage tests are now approved. In the workplace design requirements in accordance with EN 50191 must be complied with.
In modern hipot test devices of SPS electronic a great number of specifications such as among others test voltage, the type and duration of the test and the maximum leakage current in accordance with the current standards can be adjusted individually. Via the fully electronic generator accurate and quick tests can be performed independent of load and mains voltage. Our hipot testers can be used worldwide regardless of whether at 230 V and 50 Hz in Germany or at 120 V and 60 Hz in the USA. In addition to a wide range of hipot test devices we also offer various test devices for insulation resistance tests, leakage current tests and ground bond tests. These tests can both be offered in single devices and in multi function testers.
