Equivalent leakage current test

The leakage current is the current flowing over the error-free insulation of a device to the earth or to a foreign conductive part – such as the housing.

This leakage current is measured by means of a leakage current test. The equivalent leakage current test is, contrary to the normal leakage current test, not carried out during the operation of the product and also only with a greatly reduced voltage. Due to this the measured current must be extrapolated to a current that would flow at the rated voltage. During the equivalent leakage current measurement the measuring circuit is electrically isolated from the mains and does not, due to the low voltage, involve a risk potential as with the leakage current measurement with mains voltage.

With the multi function testers of SPS electronic you can perform both a leakage current test as well as an equivalent leakage current test. Depending on the standard and application you need only a single device for the respective measurements. While the leakage current test is usually carried out in the production equivalent leakage current tests are performed for repeat and repair tests.
