European Standards

In order to be made a European standard (EN) it must be accepted by one of the European standardisation committees.

Standardisation results from voluntary cooperation between industry, companies, public authorities and other members of public and social (research institutions, consumer organisations, members of social and environmental interest groups). At the national level the national standardisation committees take care of the standardisation – they adopt national standards and make them public. At the European level the standardisation is coordinated by the three officially recognized independent European Standardisation Organisations (ESO):

  • European Committee for Standardisation (CEN)
  • European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC)
  • European Institute for Telecommunication Standards (ETSI)
