The term surge tester applies to an impulse winding test device. This device is manufactured by SPS electronic under the name ST 3800 G (manual device) and ST 3800 L (generator for the OEM use). This SPS surge tester detects already existing interturn short circuits and makes it possible by means of its special test method to detect prior defects which do not yet represent an electrical interturn short circuit.

The inner insulation of a coil can only be tested with a surge tester, i.e. per an impulse winding test.

A surge tester is not only useful to be applied in a laboratory and in development. Primarily the test system is applied in serial production.
